How many years of study?
A total of four years; the first two at University College London, the next two at the University of Cologne.
Is it also possible to start studying in the summer semester?
No, the programme can only begin in the winter semester.
How many applicants are allocated a study place?
Maximum ten students, five each from the University of Cologne and University College London.
Who can apply?
High school graduates who want to start their studies in the winter semester. The Abitur average should be 1.5 or better.
Prerequisites for participation in the course of study are excellent English language skills and special aptitude for the binational study of law. Both are determined in an admission procedure at the University of Cologne for participants who apply in Cologne.
What is the required level of English/German skills?
As students during their time in London/Cologne will be in a study programme with regular English/German students, excellent language skills are a prerequisite for this study programme.
Can I apply even if I am already studying law?
Since the course of studies mainly consists of lectures for first semesters, it is not suitable for students who have already studied law in Germany for more than one year. Under certain conditions, credits earned before the start of the course of study can be credited to the credits required for the course of study.
Which degrees does this programme offer?
Successful graduates acquire the degrees "Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.)" from University College London and "Bachelor of Laws" from the University of Cologne.
The "Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.)" enables the beginning of practical training as a lawyer in England. In Germany there is the possibility to continue the studies until the First State Examination. This can be taken at the University of Cologne after approximately three further semesters.
How much are the tuition fees?
Tuition fees are only payable at University College London; they are currently around £23,300. At the University of Cologne only the semester fee of about 250 € per semester is due. The management of the course of studies tries to arrange scholarships to partially cover the costs of living, which are quite high in London, for the participants accepted in Cologne.
What counts as one of the six requirements of achievement in the sense of §4, section 2, sentence 2, half-sentence 1 of the examination regulations which are not prescribed?
- Written examinations of the basic studies (incl. basic examinations)
- Written exams of the main study period (main study period - core or optional area)
- term paper, intermediate level
- exercises
- the certified active participation in an international moot court
What do I have to consider when registering for exams?
Please register in KLIPS 2.0 for exams in both the LLB Double Degree programme as well as in Law, if you are registered for both.
As soon as it is not possible to register for exams via KLIPS 2.0, please request a separate cover sheet from Ms Kindler (kkindler@uni-koeln.de) so that your performance can be recorded. This applies in any case to Schwerpunktklausuren and attempts at improvement.
